Like countless other Midwesterners, my family trekked to Florida for Spring Break last week. We visited my parents in Ft. Myers, and my husband and I were even able to leave the kids with Nana & Grandpa and take an overnight jaunt to Key West.
For the most part, our trip was super fun and we enjoyed a couple of beach days (our last two days were rainy, so we were glad to get in the beach days right from the start) and family fun.
But there were definitely some hiccups that either caused us to laugh or scratch our heads, or make us think we were the only sane people on the planet.
So throughout the week I made a couple of notes on my phone so I wouldn’t forget, and where I could, I snapped pictures. Such as this first one.
1. Asinine Move of the Day
Would anyone care to take a guess which state we were in, seeing a man smoking within 8 feet of a gas pump? Mmm-hmm, that’s right. While it could happen anywhere, this happened in Kentucky. My dad was born and raised in Kentucky, so he was the first one I was tickled to show the photo to. Now I haven’t read the little signs posted at pumps closely enough, maybe 8 feet is a perfectly acceptable radius of a lit cigarette from a fuel pump, but I kinda think it’s a bit asinine, myself.
2. Thirsty Calves

If you missed my money-saving tips this morning on Indianapolis’ B105.7, here’s the rundown!
- Parents of potty training kiddos, you might be able to score FREE Good Nights brand Bed Mats at Walmart, for night time training. Print a high value coupon for $4 off any size package, and take it to Walmart where you might find travel size packs for around $2 (although I didn’t see this in my store), or else apply it to a larger size package for still great savings. You can even print the coupon twice.

What can you give to a high schooler or recent grad that can help them learn how to make good money decisions for their next phase of life?
Smart From the Start
by Brad Kronland and Rob Roach of Fishers, Indiana is the perfect pocket guide to help young adults with all the do’s and don’ts of their first critical financial choices:
- Getting their first car – leasing vs. buying, pre-owned vs. new – and how to negotiate the deal
- Deciding whether to rent an apartment vs. buy a house
- Understanding the buying process, mortgages, and taxes in simple, easy-to-understand terms
- Figuring out their insurance deductible, 401(k) options, investing and saving for retirement
- … and so much more!
At the end of each chapter are easy definitions relating to the topic introduced. You also learn how “they” make money, whether “they” are the insurance agent, credit card issuers or other key players. All throughout the book there are tips from fictitious “Ted”, who may not make the best decision but learns his valuable lesson, proving that even smart people make mistakes!
Here’s an excerpt from the book:
How can insurance companies make a profit when they are constantly paying for their customers’ car repairs or doctor bills? Insurance companies make a profit by collecting insurance premiums, investing those premiums in stocks, bonds, or other investments, earning money on those investments, and then paying claims with a portion of those gains. They are very good at projecting how many insurance claims will be filed during a year. They use this information to set their premiums, making sure they’ll be more than the projected claims.

If you missed my money-saving tips this morning on Indianapolis’ B105.7, here’s the rundown!
I wanted to plug a couple of handy apps you can load to your smartphone. So I was heading into Old Navy, and I didn’t have a coupon and their usual Facebook offer wasn’t updated yet. I loaded Old Navy’s Snap Appy mobile app to my phone. Now you don’t right away get a coupon, but if you scan any Old Navy logo – like on a price tag or in an ad insert, you’ll get plugged into special offers! Pretty quickly I got a $5 coupon to use on my in-store purchase, not bad! Find it for your iPhone or Android device.
- And there are mobile apps that will, legitimately, pay you for a little spy work in grocery and retail stores! Unfortunately for me, I have an Android and these that I’ve checked out are only available on iPhones, however through iTunes you can check out Field Agent and Easy Shift, both will pay you for a little mystery shopping in the form of scanning bar codes, snapping a few photos and submitting prices with your mobile phone, so check those out on iTunes and earn a few bucks while you shop!
